Well if you want a plain iced fairy cake - it's just icing sugar and water (flavouring) and mix to a thick consistency.

Icing sugar and a little water

Icing sugar & water, how simple is that ?

You can add other things to make it more intewresting, cocoa powder, lemon juice, coffee

Icing sugar and water with either food coloring or raspberry juice to color it.

If you Go Down to a shop and buy one it would be a alot easier as it woulnt be as messy and you wouldnt need to worry about anything going wrong =] Hope I Helped and enjoy those cakes

Icing sugar and a lil water

icing, sugar, frosting & water.

icing sugar and water

why not make them in to butterfly cakes, cut a circular bit out of the top, fill the hole with jam and/or cream, cut the bit you removed in half and stick in to the filling as wings!!! my gran used to make us these and we loved them x

or buttercream which is just icing sugar and butter, bit of milk too if its too stiff. any flavouring you like - lemon juice, OJ, vanilla, coffee etc etc, and food colour if you like.

----------------------------------FROSTI...
1 Stick butter; softened
1/2 To 3/4 c. powdered sugar
3/4 ts Strawberry extract(or any flavor)
Drops of milk or cream
Food coloring

To make the frosting, mix butter and sugar together and add extract and milk or cream to make a smooth spread.

These cakes need no "icing" since food coloring is an ingredient for the filling.

FAIRY CAKES

These are the Fairy Cakes that were mentioned often in the Martha Grimes' mysteries.

2/3 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
3 eggs
2/3 c. granulated sugar
2 tbsp. butter, melted
1 tbsp. hot water

Filling:

1 c. heavy whipping cream
1/4 c. granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Food coloring, as needed

To make the cakes, heat oven to 425 F. Grease and flour 2 muffin tins (to make 24 cakes). Set aside. Sift together flour and baking powder; set aside. Place eggs and sugar in a bowl and whisk until thick. Fold in flour mixture gently. Add melted butter and hot water. Blend thoroughly, using spoon. Divide mixture into muffin tins. Bake 8 to 10 minutes.

To make filling: While whipping the cream with an electric mixer set on medium-high speed, gradually add sugar and vanilla extract. Beat until the texture of shaving cream. If desired, divide mixture and stir in food coloring.

To assemble cakes: With a sharp, pointed knife, cut away risen area from the top of each cake and set aside (do not discard). Fill hole with a dollop of whipped cream. Cut the reserved top sections in half to form "wings." Place wings on top of cream and you have fairy cakes.

Makes 24 cakes.

NOTE: Instead of dyeing the filling pink and green, it would also be pretty to leave it natural and dust with gold sprinkles or colored sugar crystals.
