What can you subsitute sake, mirin, and tamari with ?!


Question: I eat or drink wine so i cant add it to my food. so when i try cooking a japanese recipe , i want to subsitute the alchohol with something else. Or do you even need to add the alchohol??

sake doesn't really have much flavour per se, and mirin and tamari are non alcoholic. When you cook wine anyway, all the alcohol gets burned off. Just make sure you cook it to boiling point and keep it there for 10 min. Add a little water so that it doesnt burn. Then add it to the food.

water can be used but the flavor will suffer. The alcohol is used to draw the flavor out of the meat or sauce, you can go without but it will taste slightly different.

sake can be substituded with pale dry medium sherry. its not an exact match, but its the closest thing.

tamarind can be sustituded with lemon juice or maybe even vinegar.

i am not sure you can replace mirin. wikipedia said it can be replaced with a dry sherry aswell.
