I grew up calling it "tomato sauce" (like for spaghetti) but our neighbor called the same thing "tomato gravy".
Tomato Gravy (Tomato Sauce)
2 large cans Italian style tomatoes, pureed
1/2 pound ground beef
1 small can tomato paste
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp dried oregano
1 sprig basil
1 bay leaf
salt & pepper to taste
olive oil
?????
Saute onion and garlic in 2 tbsp olive oil until golden. Add ground beef and cook over medium heat until the beef is no pink is visible. Add pureed tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir. Add oregano. Tear up and add basil. Add bay leaf, salt (about 1 tsp) and pepper to taste.
When gravy begins to boil turn heat down to simmer and cook for 45 minutes. Excellent served over pasta!
If you are vegetarian, leave out the meat and have it "marinara" style.
