The problem with mustard oil is the amount of erucic acid it contains. There are firms producing low erucic acid versions for culinary use. The main one is in Australia. Their product might be available over here.

It's fine to use mustard oil in cooking, people in India use it all the time! Buy a normal bottle of mustard oil from your local supermarket, it shouldn't be dangerous!

I have used two types of mustard oil and I have never heard of any nasty side effects. There is an unflavoured variety that is very similar to ghee. It has a wonderful dark golden colour is a lovely buttery flavour. The other variety I used was spicy and was terrific in salad dressings etc. Maybe it's a treatment or processing issue? Really I have never heard of any ill effects from using it. Btw, Yandilla is the brand I use. I live in Australia.
