What kind of icing or frosting is used on store bought cakes?!

Question: Most bakeries, including those at grocery stores, use ready-made frosting or frosting mix that they purchase from a commercial source. Often, this is Bettercreme, made by the brand Rich's. I've heard you can buy this at some wholesale clubs (Sam's Club) and I've seen it for sale at a U-Bake shop. (U-Bake sells partially baked frozen baked goods and other food items.)

Here is a recipe for a version of bakery frosting I've used that uses nondairy creamer, and that has that creamy flavor of bakery frosting:

Bakery Frosting (from Taste of Home’s Cupcakes & Muffins magazine special)

2 cups shortening
? cup nondairy creamer
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 package (32 oz.) confectioners’ sugar
? to ? cup water
Food coloring, optional

In a large mixing bowl, beat the shortening, creamer, and extract. Gradually beat in the confectioners’ sugar. Add enough water until frosting reaches desired consistency. If desired, add food coloring.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months, Bring to room temperature before spreading. Yield: 8 cups

I've got two more bakery frosting recipes, so feel free to email me through Yahoo answers if you'd like the others.

Generally it is buttercream frosting..

Some stores use butter cream and some use something called better-cream which is more like a whipped cream.

Tastes like sugared shortening---I always peel it off--yuck...
