What's Oatmeal?!

Question: I know, weird question. But really, I just want to know what it is, does it taste good, and how do you make it. Answer one of these questions and if you really rock, you should answer all 3. Thanks for your help.

Oatmeal (the good kind) is made from whole oats, which are a grain. In the UK they refer to it as porrige. I like the steel-cut oats -- this is just a way of cutting the grain, but it gives it more texture and flavor. For the steel-cut oatmeal, you boil water and salt and add in the appropriate amount of oatmeal, stir, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occassionally. I'll usually do this on a Sunday, and put it in 5 plastic containers with blueberries or maybe some chopped walnuts and then I've got my breakfasts for the whole work week. It's good for you, it's heart-healthy and can lower cholesterol. You can also get the quick oats or the instant that you basically just add hot water, but I find them tasteless and kinda slimmy, so I prefer the steel-cut (sometimes referred to as Scottish oatmeal). Give it a try, it's filling and nutritious.

I was brought up by my Swedish grandfather on oatmeal for breakfast every workday. Back then we used the old-fashioned oats that Barbara talks about. I agree, those are the best. Because of the speed of life today,I have had to adjust to the quick oats which take about 2 minutes plus but I agree,m i can't handle the instant oats. Slimy is a good word for them!! I put some raisins in the water as I boil it, then add the oats. This gives me enuf sweetness that I don't need to add sugar,so its healthy, but i treat myself to milk & sugar once in a while. You can get as creative with oatmeal as you can with cold cereals.
