Answers: It will take 2-3 hours but make sure you keep an eye on the water level and always keep it full.
It'll take around 2 hours and a half , but remember to keep stirring.
Please don't heat an unopened can of milk because it can explode!!! There are 3 easy and fast ways to carmelize it:
To carmelize a can of sweetened condensed milk:
1. microwave: pour the milk into a microwave-safe glass container. Cook on medium for 4 minutes (stir at 2 mins). Reduce power to medium/low and cook for another 12 to 18 minutes. Pause the microwave every 2 minutes to stir. You will know when it's done by the nice golden color.
2. oven: pour the milk into a 9 inch pie plate and cover it with foil. Put the pie plate with the milk into a larger container with water that goes half way up the outside of the pie plate. Bake at 425 F for 1 1/2 hours or until golden brown.
3. stovetop: pour the milk into the top of a double boiler and cook over simmering water for approx 1 1/2 hours. Remember to stir often.
With any of these methods, beat the caramel after cooking to make it smooth.
