I'm making Shepherd's Pie, HELP please!!?!

Question: I was just going to make an easy Shepherds pie...I have everything except the tomato paste...I did find a can of diced tomatoes.
Every recipe calls for either tomato soup, tomato paste, or spaghetti sauce...all I have is ketchup and diced tomatoes ....what should i do with the hamburger mixture to make it taste good???
Should I used the diced tomatoes and ketchup??
Thanks a lot for any help!!

Hmmm...sheppard's pie with tomato sauce? Oh well, to each, their own! lol

If you must use it, you can try blending the diced tomatoes and a bit of ketchup together.

don't stress, use the tomatoes and a touch of ketchup
a recipe is a blueprint, change what you like

I have never even heard of a Shephard's Pie with tomato anything!! Not saying it ain't so...just saying, I don't think that's real traditional. Here is a quick recipe I have...

SHEPHARD'S PIE

1 lb. ground beef
1 can peas
1 can sweet corn
1 medium onion, diced
1/3 c. sugar
8 medium potatoes
2 c. shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Boil potatoes, mash and season to taste with milk and butter.
Brown ground beef and onion with salt and pepper. When cooked, add peas, corn, sugar. Let simmer until heated through. Drain excess liquid.

In 13x9 pan place meat and vegetable mixture in bottom of pan. Cover with mashed potatoes and sprinkle cheese on top.

Place in oven on BROIL until cheese is bubbly or light brown.

I don't use any tomato products in my shepherd's pie. Most recipes don't call for it. They just call for beef broth or gravy.

Google shepherds pie recipes and you'll see that most are tomato-less. Beef broth is your best bet. Season with various herbs. If you have worcesteshire sauce, add a few healthy splashes.

You can put the diced tomatoes in a blender and blend until smooth. Add a bit of cornstarch to thicken.

elle55407 has the right answer, I have never heard of shepherds pie with any type of tomatoe, It sounds gross. Now elle has the good recipe and Im going to her house for dinner.

There are many versions of shepherd's pie.... some have tomatoes and sauces but most do not... it depends where you live mostly.... Not knowing what all you are putting in the recipe....I don't know exactly what you need or don't need.

Wow! I've never heard of tomatoes in shepherds pie. I put corn on the bottom, ground beef or left over roast beef or pork on top of the corn. Top it with gravy, add mashed potatoes over that, and add cheese at the end when everything is heated through. Put it in the over for 5 minutes to melt the cheese and eat it.
