Question: that's a good question. I usually use a mix of onion and garlic.. since to me, shallots taste like a cross between the two..

Don't know why there is not substitute use there real thing not that exspensive.

green onions (white part only) OR onions (1 small onion = 3 shallots) + dash crushed garlic OR red onion OR green onions OR garlic

Fine diced onions with chopped garlic...It is your best alternative

Simply use onion, but chop up a WHOLE LOT finer than you usually would! Often a shallot is only called for in a recipe because the cook/chef means really, really finely chopped onion and/or such a small amount is required, a whole onion would otherwise be wasted! Chose nice sharp onions to be most like shallots, or use the white part of spring onions (scallions) instead.

I believe that shallots do not mean exactly the same thing in different parts of the world. I have encountered shallots actually referring to spring onions or scallions. In South East Asia, it refers to very small purple-red onions, the size of garlic cloves. You can substitute Spanish red onions for such shallots. If you mean spring onions, you could try white onions or chives.

It would be a mix of onion and garlic. But more onion than garlic. Shallots taste like the 2 put together. Good luck!!

Onions or garlic or both!
