Do you dread chopping onions?!
Answers: yep,my eyes sting!
If you cut out the ends where the most potent part of the onion is, then it's not so bad. But, I wear contact lenses and onion fumes don't bother me.
why?!! not at all
not really.
i guess i'm just used to it. I cut onions everyday. (i'm almost a chef) :)
my eyes water a little bit but it doesn't bother me
I don't! I have a Pampered Chef food chopper and it is the bee's knees for chopping anything, but especially onions. It contains the food inside a clear compartment and chops with 6 blades. Fast, easy, keeps your fingers out of harm's way, and keeps the "cry" inside until you are done chopping. You can get one for yourself at www.pamperedchef.biz/janicetippett.
not since i bought a chop wizard....it is a wonderful kitchen gadget.
You need a really sharp knife. If the cells are cut open or chopped with one, the onion fumes will not be an issue.
not since i discovered a little trick:
- peel it
- slice it in quarters
- rinse quarters under running water
- chop the rest...
the water will bind a lot of the fumes and slicing the rest will only release a fraction of the original content...
works best with lukewarm water.
alternativ: wear eye goggles and look funny ;-)
don't like to do it, but nothing to dread. after all, they add alot to most dishes don't they?
No because I have a Star Frit chopper. I can do a 5lb. bag of onions in 3 minutes. I love it , love it, love it. Then I just pop it all in a freezer bag and its ready when I want to cook. Buy one at Walmart, they are the best deal going.
yeah and some bother me more than others
Not usually, because very rarely do they make my eyes water.
I use to here, but then I gotsa smart and started saving the cotton out of the new aspirin bottles and now I save them to stick em up my nose (each side). I use Bayer just to help protect me from having a heart attack answering questions this early in the morning. Peace everyone have a great day!!! (Hope ya smiled!)
I love the smell of a fresh onion, or garlic.
contact lenses are a good send. they don't make me cry at all anymore. probably the only plus point of being nearly blind!!
In spring when Vidalia Onions are in season, buy a ton of them & chop & freeze a big supply. These onions don't produce nearly as many fumes, so chopping tham isn't as much of a chore. They also taste MARVELOUS!
Not at all, I use my mini chopper. All I have to do is cut the onion in quarters and put ii in the chopper and it does all the work.
I buy them already chopped in the produce section. I am HORRIBLY sensitive to onions. Almost embarrassingly. I look like someone's been beating me!
No, I never have a problem. Use a sharp knife and slice them, do not just chop.
No, i use a mini chopper for my onions.
And just recently, I have switched over to
sweet onions, they don't have that strong
fume, like the yellow onions & they are tasty.
yes honey..
Yeh i do cut onions i wash my eyes before and after i cut the onions
