Make your own burgers. Mix an onion with some garlic, mustard seeds, salt, pepper and some chilli powder if you like them spicy and add a beaten egg. Shape into burgers then chill in the fridge and cook on the bbq or grill them.

Ingredients For Mince And Tatties


500g of minced beef or quorn
Four large potatoes for the mash
3 carrots
One large onion
500mls of gravy stock

Optional ingredients: A tablespoon of Worcester sauce and a white pudding. If a thicker stock is needed then add cornflour or plain flour during the cooking of mince and tatties. Some cooks like to add herbs like thyme or rosemary which should be added about ten minutes before the end of cooking. Some chefs like to serve mince and tatties with neeps. More traditional Scots chefs will add some oatmeal at the beginning of the recipe.

These ingredients for mince and tatties will serve a family of four.

Peel the potatoes and carrots. Make your mashed potatoes as normal. Scottishrecipes.co.uk like to chop tatties into thin cubes and bring to the boil and then simmer for about thirty minutes. The water is then drained and a small amount of milk and butter or margarine is added before mashing the potatoes. This can be done as the mince is cooking and the mashed tatties made ready to time with the mince being ready.

The mince should be browned in a frying pan over a medium heat along with the chopped onions, unless they have been liquidised in which case they should be added later. Remove from the heat and drain any excess oil. To keep the mince and tatties low fat no lard or cooking oil should be added. Instead just fry the mince as it is and brown in its own oils.

Add the liquidised carrots and or onions and chopped carrots depending on your own preference. Add the stock or gravy mixture and return to the heat. Bring to the boil and then turn down the heat and gently simmer for about thirty minutes.

If you are using a butchers bought white pudding or haggis during your mince and tatties recipes then add it at the boiling and simmering stage. It should remain intact and cook thoroughly but if all the family enjoy the taste of white puddings and haggis then split the skin and stir throughout the mince mixture.

Once the mince is cooked serve with the mashed potato and any additional vegetables. An oatcake or two or even a separate helping of skirlie makes mince and tatties a great Scottish dish. Read the Scottish Recipes Skirlie Recipe.

Many people like to add dumplings to their mince and tatties.

I like twisting meals to make them fit the ingredients:

Instead of strips of fillet, chuck steak mince on a slow cook makes a fab rich stroganoff.

Moussaka crosses over well.

And my favorite of all time, a South African dish called Babotie:

Babotie

1 lb. lean ground beef
3 slices stale bread
1 1/2 cup milk
2 eggs
1 lg. finely chopped onion
1 Tbsp. curry powder
2 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. vinegar
1 Tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp. pepper
2 level tsp. salt
2 oz. raisins
2 oz. dried apricots
2 oz. apple rings, dried
3 bay leaves

Cover raisins, apricots and apple rings with cold water and allow to soak
overnight. Place ground beef in a bowl. Soak bread in 1/2 cup of milk.
Squeeze out and crumb into beef. Blend well. Melt butter and brown chopped
onion. Chop dried fruit, reserving the fruit liquor. Add the chopped fruit
to the onion. Combine the fruit liquor, vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper and
curry powder; add to onion and fruit. Allow to simmer until thick,
stirring
constantly. Mash any whole pieces of fruit and add sauce to ground beef.
Blend well and place in a greased baking dish. Beat eggs and stir in
remaining milk. Pour over meat and add bay leaves. Bake at 325 degrees
until set and a golden brown.

I serve it with sambals in bowls of onion/tomatoe salad, peach chutney, dessicated coconut, bananas in yoghurt and somtimes diced mango. Lush!

Well I checked out the responses and the only thing I haven't seen is something we call minced beef. There isn't a specific recipe, but I can get you close.

Sautee 1 small onion, about 1/2 green pepper in oil with a little salt and pepper. Then add about 1 lb. meat, season with seasoning salt and a sprig of fresh thyme. Then add about 1/4 c. ketchup. Then pour over enough water to cover the meat. Let this simmer until the meat gets thick.

You can serve on bread or with rice, but my favorite is with fried dumplings.

Last night I made algrotten potatoes with pieces of chopped up steak. It turned out yummy

Cornish pasties, lasagna, meatballs, cottage pie, chili con carne, burger patties, or some sort of sausage roll.
