Remember the "Maid-Rite" shops in the midwest?!

Question: Specifically in IA (that's where I know them from) I'm from IL. I am no longer there and sometimes want a big sloppy maid-rite sandwich. It's a craving somewhat like a wh. castle craving.

Anyway, looking for a great recipe fom someone that KNOWS. Thank you ahead of time for helping!

I live 10 Minutes North of one Maid-Rite and 45 minutes South of another.....Yummy!

The recipe I've got is simple, and very tasty. So, here you go, scaled down to make enough for four:

2 to 2 and 1/2 pounds ground beef
1/4 cup dehydrated minced onion
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon Adolph's meat tenderizer
one 14.5 ounce can chicken broth
1 tsp sugar
2 tsp prepared mustard

In a large pan or skillet, combine the above ingredients, and stir over medium heat until the beef is cooked through, and most of the liquid has cooked off. With a slotted spoon, heap the meat on a bun, top with a little diced fresh onion, pickles and mustard if you like.

I've found that hot dog buns, though not authentic, hold the meat better...

I am from Indiana and think of a 'made right' as chopped up hamburger with finely diced onion mixed in and then fried and eaten on bread instead of hamburger bun. Not sure it's the same thing you are talking about but they are good!
