Italian beef sandwich - where?!
I won't even get into the pizza issue. I know nowhere has it as good as Chicago.
Answers: I'm from Chicago, but have been to many other cities. I can NEVER find a decent Italian beef sandwich anywhere but in the Chicago area. I mean the big honkin' sandwich on french (Gonella bread in Chicago) bread with TONS of beef and juice to die for, with gardinare and hot peppers.....seems no other city has them like this. Anyone know where else? But if you haven't had a Chicago beef, I guess you wouldn't know anyway. Just thought I'd ask.

My hubby and I moved from the Chicago area to the North Georgia Mountains 6 years ago, long story, anyway, we were lucky enough to have found 2 places fairly close to us that serve Chicago style food. The owners in both restaurants are from Chicago, one is a retired Police Officer. So we are able to get really good Italian Beefs, combos and pizza in one location and the other specializes in the Chicago style dogs and beefs. Of course nothing compares to going home for vacations!! We always plan our days around which restaurants for lunch and which ones for dinner!
Now I'm hungry for a beef, I guess that what's for dinner tomorrow!
how about italy
com'on

I'm from Chicago too and obviously nothing beats Portillos. There is a place in Burbank, CA called Taste Chicago that is the closest italian beef to Portillos I've had. Joe Mantegna owns it which is kinda cool. Man I'm hungry now, an italian beef sounds good.
I haven't found or seen a beef sandwich on The Food Net that even resembles our Chicago beef sandwiches! I want one now too!
have you ever been to Italy???????????
if not try there.........
I've never been to Chicago to eat any of the amazing Italian beef sandwiches or awesome pizza that I have heard so much about...but I do travel 3 hours to Manitowoc, WI for some amazing italian 'Tony's Pizza'! The crust is ... mmmm...and the sauce is...ooooo....and the italian sausage....ugh! to die for! Good luck on your hunt...as far as I know, you cant beat Chicagos italian food! :) Soooo jealous!!!!

How about an easy recipe, even you will love.
I make these all the time and think they taste every bit as good as Italian Beef's chicago style.
5 lb sirloin tip roast
1 pkg good seasons Italian dressing
1 jar (12 oz) pepperoncini
Rub roast in olive oil, pat the dressing on like a rub. In a crockpot, pour half the jar of pepperoni, then add the roast and cover with rest of peppers, cover and cook on high until roast is tender (maybe 4 hours) then turn to low and let go about 2 more hours and roast should be falling apart, tender and full of flavor. You can order your favorite giardinara online and you can surely find good rolls wherever you are at to dunk in the great juices.
Brooklyn, New York...all things Italian....but you knew that going in
My high school boyfriend would take me to this place in Des Plaines - Chicago suburb. Just a shack in the middle of a gravel parking lot. They served Italian beef and Italian sausage sandwiches with bell peppers all cooked over charcoal on grills made from steel drums. I can taste those sandwiches to this day, and that was 45 years ago!
"windy city beef" in El cajon, ca. (San Diego)
Perfect Beef, wet
perfect hot dog, loaded
awsome fries
Just like back home.
It's the only place worth mentioning. Forget the Pizza, it hasn't gotten here yet. Not even close. It's funny, cuz all thees folks keep saying oh, this pizza is great; or that one is excellent, however, they never had anything to compare it to. cept, domino's or something.
Sorry to break this to you. You're worshiping false idols. You haven't tasted good beef or pizza until you've eaten both in Italy.
Art man, Polish sausages are good in Chicago. The pierogies are great too.
Try Tingalings up on Bloomfield Ave. in Newark for real Italian deli sandwich.
