What is a good substitute for cumin?!
Answers: I am making a spicy tomato sauce to have with prawns. The recipe requires half a teaspoon of cumin and half a teaspoon of cinnamon. Just realsied I have no cumin. Is there anything similar I could replace it with?
A teaspoon of coriander.
EDIT: You said your sauce was for prawns, so the coriander suggestion was because it has a bright, light lemony flavor. There isn't anything that tastes like cumin except cumin. However, if you have a Mexican flavor going for your sauce, then there is cumin in taco seasoning. You could use some of that. There is also cumin in some curry powders. You could go that way, too.
Good luck!
a bit of red pepper
There isn't really anything that tastes like cumin, so maybe try coriander.
Sure I hardly ever use Cumin, and instead use a bit of red pepper flakes but not to much unless you like it really spicy then have at it. Or use a bit of Tobasco or red chili pepper maybe. Sounds good what your making though, care to send me the recipe. My kids love prawns so does hubby.
Happy cooking

I replace cumin with fajita seasoning :)
Nothing really. You can toast some corriander in a dry pan and grind that up. If you have some chipotles that would work, but definitely make it spicier. Perhaps some toasted chili powder. Cumin is really smoky so you want to get that flavor in it to make it right.
cumin seeds/powder - use if you have any of these. There cant be a substitute.
garam masala - leave out the cinnamon.
I see a lot of people saying they would use pepper instead. Actually, you would use cumin WITH pepper, and a lot of other seasonings, too. Cumin is one of those spices I keep in my cupboard at all times. Any time you want to add a little smokey flavor, cumin's your spice. Are you aware that, besides being expensive, those taco seasoning packets contain more sugar than anything? Do your own: chili powder, garlic, oregano, cumin, and pepper (if you wish).
Here are some of the things I add cumin to: Chili; tacos; fajitas; sloppy joe; skillet steak; mexican chicken. Again, any time you want a smokey taste, pull out the cumin. A small amount goes a long way.
I dont really think there is a good substitute for cumin. And if you get it, be carefull, its very invasive. Garam Masala may by a try, as you were already told, Jamaica pepper, five epices power from chinese cousine and nutmeg can be anothers.
I know it is not your question, but let me tell you as a general rule, than when you are cooking it is generally a good thing to follow your instint and to trust in your own and serene decisions and in your good taste. If you dont have that, having every ingredient of a receipt, even in their exact amounts, do not makes sure you will get a good dish and a good outcome in your hands.
Talking of prawns, look for Brazilian, Caribbean and Asian reciepts for next time.
Well, hoping my answer will be useful for you, and that you will excuse my english, my best hopes from Argentina, Ramón P.
mixture of coriander and caraway seeds, you may add touch of basilic.
