I have a few questions about saffron rice?!

Question: I have never made saffron rice before. Do they sell it pre made in a box? I found a recipe for how to make it that calls for saffron threads. What are they and where in the grocery store can I find these?

You can find saffron threads at the grocers. Spice Island has some - they are extremely expensive - about 16.99 for 1/8 oz., but you only need a pinch for most recipes.........I love saffron.........the mexican version is called safflower and is a larger variety and much cheaper but doesn't provide the exact same aroma or taste. I've only had a couple of the boxed variety brands of rice with it that are ok.

There are some brands pre-made in the rice section of the store. Saffron threads can be purchased at a spice shop. They are kind of expensive.

Saffron is the center part of a flower. Its is thin and dark red and looks like red thread. Also it is rare and hard to pick. This makes it the most expensive spice in the world. People (mainly professionals) can use it to flavor things (like rice) but it is so expensive that I dont think you can buy pre-made saffron rice.

"I`m just wild about Saffron."

In my grocery store the saffron is kept behind the Customer Service counter. Because it is so expensive, you usually will not find it with the other spices. I have seen saffron rice in the pasta/rice section. It was not in a box, but was wrapped in a cellophane tube.

I have not seen pre made saffron rice yet. But you can buy the threads in the spice sections. It's a bit expensive but some Asian stores sell them for a whole lot cheaper.
Yummy!!!

I suggest you use Basmati Rice. Saffron is readily available at Indian groceries.

Tk less than a pinch and soak it in 3-4 table spoons of milk.

Add this to the rice and cook.

Bon apetit

Safron Threads are very expensive...You can find them at a health food grocery store like WHOLE FOODS or WILD OATS. last time I checked was $ 30.00 per ounce.
