Can I use a gas igniter (used in ovens/ gas burners) in replacement for a blow torch?!


Question: i am planning to make a creme brulee.. I need to caramelize the sugar on top, however, i dont have a blow torch to do so.. can I use a gas igniter? if not, what else can I use?

No. The flame of a gas igniter is not powerful enough. It is a very low heat flame, plus you won't be able to get it to point down at the sugar-topped custard (flames go up, not down).

There's really no substitution for the blow torch if you want to carmelize the sugar. Sticking it under the broiler would overcook the custard.

I agree, you need a blow-torch. Please don't experiment with "other methods" as I know first hand, eyebrows an eyelashes DON'T GROW BACK FAST.

Also, you would get sick of explaining your faux pas to everyone checking out your drawn-on brows. BTW, hair is extremely flammable too.

Put a little booze on top (1/4 tsp) and light it....be careful! Do it over the stove top on a baking sheet.

NO! it is not hot enough, not enough BTU's.

Do it the old-fashioned way... under the oven broiler. Raise a shelf as high as it will go, sugar your brulee, and slide under. do not walk away! Take out when sugar is melted.
