Is buying a turkey cost effective?!

Question: I am a pregnant single mom (with a 2 yr old) and am having to live on $200 a month for groceries.
I am wondering if buying a whole turkey and cooking it, and then using up all the leftovers over the course of a couple of days (Lunches and dinners) would be cost effective.

Yes it is. You have the main part of many dishes already done. You have your turkey dinner. Then you can make up many casseroles and freeze them. Then you can make a soup with the bones, and not to mention this is after a few meals of turkey sandwhiches. Remember all these left over dishes can be frozen and make quick heat and eat meals. I do this with most dishes. Make extra and freeze the leftovers. Then you bring them back out in a week or so and its like a new meal not leftovers and its free the second time around as well.

Very. And you don't have to use the leftovers right away. Just pick the turkey off of the bone and portion into 2 c. packages. That way you can freeze and know exactly how much you are working with each time!

Buying in bulk is ALWAYS the way to go! Be sure and unit price to get the best deal on your turkey.

Yes it can be. You can have roast turkey one night.
Strip down the carcus after dinner. Wrap the carcus in a zip bag. The next day, start a turkey broth. ( which can be frozen for future use BTW) and make a stew using some of your leftover turkey. Sanwiches for lunch. Turkey salad is yummy. Here is a link usuing leftover turkey

I think it would be. After the first meal, I would make up several turkey dishes and freeze, so you don't have to have turkey every day for a week.
I would keep some aside for sandwiches

Yes definitely. However, you might not need to buy a whole turkey if it's just you and your two year old eating. I bought a 7 pound breast yesterday. My husband and I ate about 1/3 of it for dinner and there's still enough to last for several days.

BTW, it took about 3 hours to cook the 7 lb. breast at 375.

very cost effective ...chicken is also very cost effective. Chicken is a little bit more veristal. but they are both cheap enough to live on for a couple days. try spluging a little bit and adding fish in your diet it will help you and your new baby. Try appling for WICK or Food Stamps this might help you and your children. Don't be too proud to take help you will need it and it will help out greatly. Go to your local town hall and apply. You don't have to tell anyone that you are applying. Good Luck!

Yes because you can make so much with the left overs. It is good for you too!
