Can raisins mold or go bad? How do I know a bird didn't poop on my raisins before they were boxed?!

Question: Those small snack boxes of raisins -- can they mold and go bad? Or do raisins dry out before they mold? They are moist, so it makes sense that they would mold? Maybe I shouldn't worry about it.

Also, I heard that the raisin producers dry the raisins out in the sun on sheets of plastic (or something?). What keeps a bird from flying over and pooping on the raisins? The raisins don't get washed off do they?

You *can* dry grapes in the sun to make raisins but I highly doubt that SunMaid is doing that. There are government sanitary regulations that must be adhered to and leaving food in open sun with birds, bugs and animals would not pass inspection.

I'm sure they use an indoor dehydrator so you shouldn't worry.

PS I've never seem a raisin with mold on it but I'm sure they can mold. Good thing is that most food mold is completely harmless to humans- although unsavory.

ETA: Oh about the spinach. Noone was pooping in the spinach. The E coli was being spread by people not washing their hands after pooping.

thats the beauty of it, you don't know if a bird pooped on it or not

I imagine that if a raisin company were drying raisins in the sun, they would put screens or glass over them to protect them from bird poop. Or, if when they were collecting the raisins, they'd throw away the ones that looked like they'd been pooped on.

that evil bird probably did.

I found mold on grapes before

I've never heard of anyone worry about raisins this much!

Do you not have a lot going on in your life my dear?

The FDA would NOT allow a raisin company to package there raisins if birds were pooping on them.

They are completely clean

well obviously if it had bird poop, you would taste it..

its okay

raisins dry out when they are old, i'm sure precautions are taken to protect the food from bird droppings.

EEEWWWWWWW

The raisins can't mold. They just get dryer and dryer, nothing else. Don't worry. :)

I guess you are not a country girl.Have you ever picked a piece of fruit from a tree and ate it without washing it? What about a tomato from the garden?Have you ever gone to pick strawberries and ate some while picking? Don't worry about it.A lot of people would have died if this was a problem.

I'm sure other people have worried about the same thing, & that it has been adddressed adequately. There are worse things to worry about..
