What can I use that is safe and effective to make rock candy?

Answers: O.k I found a recipe on the internet and everything is good. However is says to use a paperclip as a wieght on the string. As I was looking at other recipes some told me NOT to use paperclips because it would do something bad with the water.

The only problem with a paper clip is it will rust. Look all around the house and find something small and non metallic. I have seen some recipes using a plastic button on the string.
how about a wooden skewer? like the ones ya make kabobs on the grill with.
Get a plastic paper clip, but it won't matter, your not going to transfer anything to the sugar once it starts crystalizing. if your not sure get kite string and tie several knots in the bottom of it .The paper clip is just used to hold string down in the glass.

You can try going to a craft (Michael's, Joann's) store and looking in their beading section. Look for glass or plastic beads, probably about the size of a pea. It should already have a hole drilled in it and you can just thread it on. It will also be reusable. Another option would be to find a large plastic button - also with holes and reusable. Both of these will be fairly inexpensive and nonreactive (especially the glass one) with your sugar solution.
