Are pancakes supposed to be "lumpy"?!

Question: My brother is trying to make pancakes... and when I fixed them for him, he said that I was "oer-mixing" them. Is that possible? Apparently his cooking teacher told him they were supposed to be lumpy, and those chunks of dried dough are actually full of oxygen, is that true? I learned how to cook from my parents, and he learned how to cook from his cooking teacher. I've cooked pancakes like that so many times, and they were delicious, he agreed, but now that he's tryiing to cook, I'm afraid I might get sick from his cooking again. (He tried baking cookies... So please help.

I've heard that what he says is true, however I dont like lumps either, so I beat mine long enough to get rid of lumps--Ive never noticed them being to tough.

yes it is true. If you beat the batter too much your pancakes will be rough and not too tasty

Your brother's correct.

Yes, you don't want liquid form.

lumpy is good if they are air bubbles, not if it's flour. check by gently pushing one of the bubbles against the side of the pan and if it bursts fully, it's air, if it sort of pours out or you can see flour, it needs to be mixed a bit more. obvisously, you need to check this when it is in fact a mixture, and not a cooked pancake. just quickly check when he's not looking.

hope this helps!!

Pancake batter is supposed to be lumpy. The pancakes won't be.
