Tomato Paste Substitute (without Tomatos)?!

Question: Does anyone have a good substitute for tomato paste that does NOT include tomatos?

My wife is allergic to tomatos so suggestions to use tomato sauce or even ketsup will not work either.

Thanks

You do not need the tomato paste. It is being used as a thickener and for some acid and doesn't bring that much flavor to the dish, especially if you are using armagnac and or red wine. If you want the sauce to be a bit thicker, you can make a slurry of cornstarch and water.

Can't think of one. It kind of depends on the recipe. In some cases, you can leave it out, such as pizza (make white pizza, or use some pesto as a base sauce).

If this is for pizza or spaghetti or something like that use Hollendaise or Alfredo sauce.

i would look for roasted red pepper puree - or take a jar of roasted red peppers and put them in a blender - the sweetness will work in any recipe - you can serve this over pasta too - experiment with adding roasted garlic, onion and spices to your puree to make it to your liking. I highly recommend this.

Now, you said tomato paste - and thats a highly concentrated thick paste not sauce. You know a really wonderful thing I have found is red chili paste - it's in the asian section of the supermarket or at asian markets. Here it is online for sale in 12 packs which is enough to last a LONG time - lol... - but hopefully, you will be able to find it near the Chinese/mexican ethnic foods in your grocery store

It's used a lot in Thai dishes. It has them most wonderful roasted flavor and it excellent on chicken before you grill it. You will find that it (sort of) has a peanut-y taste - only slightly... its better than it sounds - do look for it - you will need to add less of it than your recipe for tomato paste calls for. Its excellent and full of flavor. Also, it's spicy and has some heat but not burn your mouth off hot - but if you do like spicy foods, this may be an added bonus.

Tomato paste would be added to that recipe to make it more savory and give it a richer glaze... I think it would be ok without it but hearing more now, i think the chili paste I mentioned would be very good with this recipe..... or, try it without the tomato paste...

It would really depend on what you are making. If you tell us what you are making or wanting to make, then we can better answer your question. Is it the flavor, the color, or the texture you are looking to keep/replace?

EDIT: Ok, now that I have more information, here is what I suggest you use. Jelly, either apple or grape. Use 1/4 cup and add 1 teaspoon cornstarch and 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice for the acid. Either will work with the flavor combination you have going on. Melt the jelly in a skillet, add the cornstarch, and proceed with the recipe. Good Luck.

Tomato paste 1 T. 1 T catsup

Carrot cream or pimento spread.
Enjoy.
