The amount of molasses added to the sugar decides the color....and might change the taste just a little .but, it will be fine to use as a substitute, or you can mix white sugar in with the brown sugar to lighten it...
To make light brown sugar from dark brown sugar, use 1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar.

Dark brown has more of a treacle taste........

not to different, just use what you have

Nathalie K is correct, dark brown sugar just has more molasses, and I do believe that just mixing in a little white sugar would suffice.

Both brown sugars are white granulated sugar mixed w/ a bit of molasses for color and flavor. The dark brown sugar just has darker molasses for a darker color. Use them interchangeably.

Domino? Brown Sugar is made in both a light brown sugar and a dark brown sugar that is noticeably darker in color and has a stronger molasses taste. The brown sugar that a consumer chooses to use is usually dependent on personal preference. Recipes will specify which to use when it makes a difference, otherwise feel free to use either light or dark.
