Your answer is 20 cups.

Actually, I read it correctly - it's 14 cups for a 2 inch pan, and 20 cups for a 3 inch pan...

Calculate the volume of the sheet cake (length * width * depth)

Calculate the volume of the round (3.14 * the radius squared (3 * 3)

Divide the area of the round into the sheet cake.

The answer is how many times you have to multiply the round cups to be able to fill the sheet cake.

Note that the above answer gave a good reference page. However she read it wrong. Using her reference page, you would use 14 cups (not 20 cups)

Donna -- Sorry I can't tell you how many cups of batter you would need. But you would need 3 pounds of batter for a 12x24x1- 1/2 inch pan. over the years I have made 1000's of sheet cakes. Bakery sheet pans are 18x24x1-1/2 inch. and I used 6 pounds of batter per pan. so for half that you would need 3 pounds.
Your 3" deep pan would be the same volum
as a bakery sheet pan so you would need the full 6 pounds of batter. But I would advise you to make the cake in two layers
and stack them I think you could run into trouble baking a 3" thick layer. But eather way you deside to go you will need 6 pounds of cake batter.
Good luck with your cake. jim b
