I always cut my tomatoes in half and then slice the flesh, it seems to be easier to cut a straight line that way.

If you get a food slicer you can make even every time. Also a really sharp knife works good

There are special tomato knives, that have ridges to cut a straight line. I know the company Henckels makes some tomato slicing lines, if you are that determined.

Put in the fridge for some time before you cut it to firm it up and then use a sharp knife.

I think the knife makes the cut. I worked for a knife company and we were able to test the products before we sold them. A super sharp knife is a must, the rest is up to you. I've even seen cutting boards with grooves to keel the blade straight as you pull it along.

Get you one of these:

And you will thank me every time you need to slice anything like Tomatoes,,,onions,,,cucumbers,,,cheese,,... about anything,,,,,I love mine. It will also cut them in these nice Julienne strips.....thick or thin,,,I love sweet purple onions sliced really thin for my salads....
