What exactly are teacakes?!

Question: From the recipes I see online and from asking family, it seems as if it's just a sugar cookie. I am in the teacake contest and wanted to do something so it won't seem like just this plain cookie, any ideas would help too, I have an idea to add some fruit on top then bake.....

Here are several good cookie recipes that fall into the 'tea cake' category without being plain.

I think it's just a fancy sugar cookie or a little mini-cake you have with tea.

Tea cakes are typically Scottish Shortbread or butter cookies. You can add stuff like finely chopped walnuts, dried fruit or jams to your tea cakes. you can also use a press or a mold to shape your tea cakes.

A tea cake is basicly a sugar cookie.

You can put a slightly harden icing over the cookie .. then use another type of icing and decorate the cookie.

Tea cakes... fluffy "scones" either plain, with raisins, cheese, cheese and ham... toasted with lashings of butter... in Devon, "scones" with lashings of fresh strawberry preserves or jams and clotted cream...

Or could be an assortment of "fancies" layered on silver platters with three trays, largest at bottom... tea cakes are flour, water, baking powder and some have butter, some use suet, some use lard. Light and fluffy...

Fresh or toasted... delicious.. they are not "cookies"... as in the true biscuit... of the British Isles... or cookies... as in Oreo...

If mixed fluffy and light, basically the same mix can be tossed into a stew with a good lid on it and cook in the stock or broth or gravy then they are called dumplings!!!

THE TEACAKES I REMEMBER MY MOM AND GRANNY'S MADE WERE LIGHT FLUFFY SUGAR COOKIES BUT THEY WERE NOT AS SWEET AS SUGAR COOKIES TODAY AND I HAVE THEIR RECIPES AND CAN'T GET THEM TO TASTE AS GOOD BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THE FREE RANGE EGGS AND HOME CHURNED BUTTER THEY USED. I HAVE FOUND A PLACE WHERE I CAN BUY THE EGGS AND BUTTER BUT CAN'T AFFORD IT AT PRESENT; I WANT TO MAKE SOME FOR MY GRANDKIDS FOR EASTER SO I AM SAVING UP THE MONEY FROM MY GROCERIES EACH WEEK TO BUY THEM. OH, JUST THINKING ABOUT THEM MAKES ME REMEMBER SETTING IN FRONT OF THE WOOD COOKSTOVE BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND SMELLING THEM COOKING AND DROOLING.
