What kind of frosting?!

Question: I have some Easter egg shaped cake pans that have decorations such as flowers and stripes on them. I would like to frost the cakes but I do not want to hide the design. Is there a certain type of frosting that would work best for this? Also, I would like to be able to use different colors.

What I have done in the past for cookies is to take a tub of store-bought cake icing - put a little bit in a small dish and microwave for about 10-15 seconds. Stir until smooth and then ice the cake or cookie. This makes a nice smooth finish and In a few minutes it hardens enough to maintain shape. You can also put it in a small ziploc bag and cut a small hole on one end. This will let you pipe it on for detail work. You can buy a tub of vanilla and add food coloring to make different colors. This is an easy and affordable way to decorate cakes and cookies.

maybe you could do layer cakes w/ frosting between the layers, then pipe buttercream frosting along the edges of the flowers, etc, to emphasize them instead of frosting over the entire thing...

Have you ever been to Magnolia's in New York and had their cupcakes? OMG!!
I found this recipe for their buttercream frosting..thought I'd share..

You could try sugarpaste, also known as fondant icing. It's fairly easy to use and can be colored and decorated. Click on the link below to see example of a Fondant Covered Easter Egg cake.....Good luck, hope this helps!
