How long was a stick of Oleo?!
Can anyone give me a definite answer on this? Preferably before I destroy a "Bleuberry Special"...
Answers: I've been going through my grandmother's old recipes and a lot of them call for a stick of oleo. Now, I know full and well that I can substitute butter or margarine for this, but I have a vague memory that a stick of oleo was really long. A standard stick of butter is a half-cup, and I seem to remember one stick of oleo being a full cup.

I have found that you can get margarine and/or butter in different sizes. Some are short fat sticks, and some are long slender sticks... the are BOTH 1/2 cup.
Well, if i t is any help, I am 65 years old and I only remember the standard size stick as being the same as today. I don't remember any really long sticks,,,it always has come four sticks to a lb....or in one lb blocks.....
As far as I know it is the same size as a stick of todays butter/margarine. Oleo is a slang reference to pretty much any manufactured oil product from engine oil to margarine. Just use 1 regular stick.
I think it was the same size as a stick of butter today. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was close enuff not to matter much in a recipe.
Oleo is the old name for margarine. One stick has been 1/2 cup for over 50 years. My mother's and grandmother's recipes always refer to oleo, so I just use margarine. I think there are still a few brands in the grocery stores that call their margarine sticks oleo.
Enjoy your Blueberry Special!
A stick is a stick, & its still 1/2 cup. i've been cooking for almost 60 years, trust me!!
