Pork ribs: crock pot then grill, or grill then crock pot?!

Question: I've made ribs in a crock pot many times, and while it isn't as good as a smoker, it gets the job done without a lot of hassle. I've often cooked them for hours in the pot, then grill them at the end to finish. However, I've also seen many people quickly grill or broil the ribs first, then use the crock pot to slow cook them.

So, which is better? Crock pot then grill, or grill then crock pot?

We parboil our ribs first in broth, mesquite smoky dry rub, hot pepper flakes, some liquid smoke and some Worcestershire sauce. Did this last night. Then we let them sit overnight in the broth. We bring them to room temp and then grill.

The parboiling infuses these flavors into the meat, but best of all, renders some of the fat out so that when we finish them on the grill, we don't have the flame ups that get the fire department all exercised. We grill them on low heat with the top down and brush them with sauce often.

grill them first...that way they have that smoky flavor and the grill will sear in the juices....then smother them in BBQ sauce in the slow cooker

Crock pot and grill- definitely!!! It just doesn’t work the other way.

I've also simmered them in a stew pot for a few hours then put on the grill.
Go for grilling last. Does lock in the flavors

Grill them to brown them and then put in the old crock pot to make them nice and tender.

crock pot then grill. that way they get soft and done all the way through. then the grill will sear the outside and and have the bbq taste and be ready to eat.

I agree with the joker, except that when i cook the meats for a crock pot I fry the meat to brown it, then add herbs, spices, salt and pepper to taste with chopped onions and if you like a little chopped garlic, I fry the lot until the onions are transparent. The meat onions and pan juices I then add to the crock pot and what other vegetables desired to promote the taste sensations.
There are other dishes we use in our restaurant that are cooked in the crock pot like saurbratten a german beef dish that is traditionaly cooked this way.
best of luck Roberto.

I pre boil my ribs first to tenderize...depending on the type of ribs they are. Slow grill them using a water pan in the center of the grill with the heat to both sides. However, have cooked them in slow cooker and while they are very tender they have less flavor that way. I add hickory chips to the water in the center of the grill. Grill master here. :) A lot depends on your marinade as well when grilling.

id do one or the other
