I slice up my potatoes and onions...dice up ham (I like adding ham to it). I butter the bottom of the casserole dish, then start layering potatoes, onion, ham...then add american cheese broken up into strips, sprinkle cheddar or cheddar-jack and then parmesean cheese, dot with butter and salt & pepper and continue the layering process with these ingredients. Once I top the potatoes with the final layer of cheeses, I then add about 2 tablespoons of milk on top of that and into the microwave (or oven) it goes! It turns out absolutely delicious everytime!!! And the aroma of it baking is just too much for me and my husband to take!! hehe! yummies!!!! (now I gotta have some! hehehe!)

2 lbs red potatoes, wash and slice thin with skin on. place in shallow water and microwave for about 3 minutes (just to soften). drain.

mix sauce ingredients in 2qt saucepan over medium low heat, stir gently until slightly thickened. Layer softened potato slices in baking dish, pour sauce over the top. Use a large spoon or spatula to genty lift potatoes and let sauce run through them.
