Frosting and Icing?!
Answers: Frosting and Icing are different. You can buy frosting in the supermarket from the cans but I need icing. Does anybody have a recipe or can I buy icing in the supermarkets?
just by the icing tube in a store and add food coloring..
They are the same thing. What you call it depends upon what part of the USA (or world) you hail from.
SNOW WHITE BUTTERCREAM ICING
This buttercream icing has an ideal consistency for frosting cakes. It has a firm quality making it good for wedding cake decorations and flat surface or flower nail flowers. Air dry decorations for 24 hours.
2/3 cup water
4 tablespoons meringue powder
12 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1-1/4 cups shortening
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
1/2 teaspoon clear vanilla flavoring
1/4 teaspoon butter flavoring
Combine water and meringue powder; whip at high speed until peaks form. Add 4 cups of sugar, one cup at a time, beating after each addition at low speed. Alternately add shortening and remainder of sugar. Add salt and flavorings; beat at low speed until smooth.
YIELD: 7 cups icing. Recipe may be doubled or cut in half; however, if cut in half, yield is only 2? cups.
Frosting and icing are basically the same. Some are cooked. The simplest are not.
Butter cream icing is made using 1 part butter (or shortning) to 3 parts powdered sugar. Add 1 t. of flavoring - can be almond or vanilla extract. Add milk T at a time until you get the consistency you want.
A glaze is thinner. You can make a simple glaze using powdered sugar and lemon juice. You can also use milk or water. Glaze can be poured over a cake.
yes in the Uk we buy it in boxes or bags and its called Icing sugar, and usually just mixed with water

Frosting and icing are the same thing, both as nouns and as verbs. You can frost a cake with icing or ice a cake with frosting or any combination of those terms and you will be accomplishing the same task. As others have said, certain regions prefer one term over the other (just like some areas use the term "soda" while others call it "pop"). For example, in Great Britain, icing is the predominant term, and they refer to powdered sugar (aka confectioner's sugar) as icing sugar.
You can purchase the frosting available in supermarkets to suit your needs. You can also buy icing/frosting mixes, dry mixes that you add liquid (milk or water) and sometimes butter to create the frosting.
Buttercream Icing (or frosting!)
1 cup all vegetable shortening
(or 1 cup butter, or 1/2 cup shortening and 1/2 cup butter)
4 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon flavoring extract (vanilla, butter, or almond, or a combination of any of these)
1 lb. (approx. 4 cups) powdered sugar
Cream shortening (or butter, or both) in a mixing bowl using a stand mixer or handheld mixer. Add water and flavoring and mix until shortening absorbs all the liquids. Add powdered sugar and mix until creamy.
Note: This will produce a soft consistency for frosting the cake. Use clear flavoring(s) and all-vegetable shortening to produce a pure white icing.
Happy Baking!
