Iceberg lettuce?!
Answers: I bought an iceberg lettuce today. What is the best way to store it (obviously in the fridge). But what should I wrap it up in to stay as fresh and crispy as long as possible? How long can I keep it for? Thanks!
I keep mine wrapped in a plastic bag, in the produce drawer of the refrigerator. Tupperware used to make a lettuce keeper that worked really well too, but don't know if they still do. One thing to remember is don't EVER cut the lettuce with a metal knife, and then put part of back. It will turn brown where the metal was against it. You can get a plastic "lettuce knife" at most kitchen stores for just a couple of dollars ... or put the lettuce core-side-down on the counter, and smash down. The core should pull out then, and you can pull the leaves off.....
An airtight container helps it to stay fresh.
line the bottom of the salad tray with kitchen roll put in the lettuce then cover with more kitchen roll, take it out of the plastic wrapper. the kitchen roll will absorb moisture so it will last longer
Store it in the fridge in a zipper top bag with a barely damp paper towel wrapped around it. It should keep a week.
sandwich box works for me, seal it up and through it out when it starts going brown
My MIL used to wrap it in a damp paper towel, then in a zipper bag. I think it really did keep it fresher longer.
Core.Wash and dry the leaves very well with paper towels...store them in a gallon sized zip locks.moisture is what makes them rot easily
Ye wid dae well tae shove it intae one o' yon plastic containers. It will keep fur longer than it wid if ye jist kept it in the wee plastic wrapper that ye bought it in...I wid imagine that ye wid be able tae hang on tae it fur at least a week.
Keep it wrapped to keep air out I can make it last for a week
1. Never store ANY vegetable in an airtight container. They release a chemical which causes them to ripen. If it can't escape into the air it will go bad much quicker. (Ohhh, that's why grape bags have holes in them...)
2. Sometimes there are bugs and stuff inside the iceberg lettuce. It's best to separate the leaves so that they dont' keep doing what bugs do best.
Smash the lettuce, stem down, against the table. Ignoring the lettuce's plea for mercy, tear the stem out of the head. Drown its final moans under cold water, tearing it apart leaf by leaf. Place the lettuce back in its bag or in a ziploc bag after drying it.
mine keeps great in a tupperware bowl (rounded top ) you could maybe buy something similar in a pound shop best of luck
wrapped in cling film
