Try starting with a good chocolate icing base first and then adding black coloring gel. It will take less coloring gel to start with chocolate than it will if you used white icing. The less gel you use, the better tasting the icing will be. Especially since it is such a large amount of black, I seriously recommend a chocolate icing base.

You could try tinting it on your own with black gel/paste color. You can buy it at wal-mart but it will take a LOT of color to get it to a true black color.

yes you can use butter cream. you will need to get black decorating color for the cake. is there any way you can do a practice run before your husbands birthday. good bakers always do a practice run before, to work out any kinks. you will need to use a lot of black because usually when you mix white frosting with the cake color it will turn grey and it will darken over time. one trick is to add cocoa powder to your frosting. to help darken it. you will also need some hot water and a cake spatula to to put the black frosting on the cake and occasionally dip the spatula in the hot water dry it off and keep applying the frosting.you want the heat to help smooth the icing on. or if you have a small wooden gumpaste roller you could try that with a little cornstarch so it doesn't stick. i hope this helps. good luck
