Do you think cake box mixes taste bad? Which is best--dunken hines, pillsbury, or something else?!

Question: I never liked the taste of boxed cake mixes and I really don't like the icings in the small plastic tubs.

I'd like to make some cupcakes. Should I just use a box, or do you think it will taste more homemade and fresh if I follow a recipe? Do you think a pound cake recipe for cupcakes is strange if it will have strawberry filling? Either that or angel food cake BOX mix. Thanks.

It depends on what I am making. And yes you can use pound cake mix/recipes for cupcakes. As for frosting, it is one of the easiest things to make. I have several recipes that start off with a boxed mix for a base and then I add to them.

One of the easiest and best is:

EASY POUND CAKE

Ingredients
1 box yellow Duncan Hines Butter Recipe cake mix (MUST be this kind)
6 eggs
3/4 cup oil
8 oz sour cream
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp of extract -- vanilla, lemon, orange, almond or strawberry (just pick the flavor you want your cake to be!)

Glaze
3/4 cup powdered sugar
6 Tablespoons melted butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
milk to thin as needed

Preheat oven to 325 degrees
Grease a bundt or angel food pan
Mix all the ingredients until well blended and pour into greased pan.
Bake for 1 hour or longer as needed.
Mix together last 4 ingredients and spread on cake while hot.

***Variations: Can also be made using the Chocolate Butter Recipe Mix and vanilla, almond, mint or chocolate extract.

My favorite is Pillsbury's Yellow Cake mix, I buy Pillsbury cream cheese frosting and make my cupcakes in icecream cones. Its great the you can bake the icecream cones for as long as you need and they will not burn. Hope I could help.

I like to use the Duncan Hines super moist cake mix. Sometimes I'll even mix sprinkles in there if I'm baking for kids.

no box cake for me

Duncan Hines FTW...try a couple of different boxes, i think its all personal taste.

I just watched a show on Fine living about a week ago (can't remember the name of it though - channel surfing!) and they tested 3 cake mixes against a cake made from scratch. Betty Crocker pudding in the mix chocolate cake mix won. Even the bakers of the scratch cake liked it!

I always have prefered either Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines. I made a chocolate cake one time from scratch..it was so dry that we only ate one piece of it before throwing it out. If you make it from scratch you have to add more oil or applesauce to make it moist.

Buy the Betty Crocker frosting in the round tubs by the cake mix. The icing in the tubes is for decorating, not doing the whole cake..OR Look up a recipe for whipped cream frosting..its the BEst!

it realy does matter when you bake a cake be created////// cake box --drunken Hines, Pillsbury

Homemade is always the best way to go. Everyone I bake for can always tell when its boxed or not.
Personally I dont mind either or, but when I do eat boxed I like Dunken Hines.
The pound cake idea sounds cool, it's something different and people will enjoy that. I have done mini cheesecakes using the cupcake pans. Everyone liked those.

I only do homemade. Check out www.allrecipes.com for great ideas. If you must use a mix or a tub of frosting, add a tsp of vanilla to it or another flavoring if you'd like. It will taste as close as you can get a box mix to tasting like the real thing. Your ideas of the type of mix will work with a filling though. Try strawberry jam, as it will not be runny.

i don't care for them, but they are ok, I like them when i make cup cakes, or if you like a lot of frosting

PILLSBURY... I LOVE PILLSBURY FUN FETTI MIX.... ITS SO YUMMY... I LOVE IT ESPECIALLY FOR CUPCAKES... WITH FUNFETTI FROSTING...

There has been a discussion going around the women in my family for a few weeks now. Which boxed cake brand is the best. My Aunt swears by Dunkin Hines, my cake decorating instructor loves Betty Crocker, and my grandmother insists on Pillsbury. I love all of them. Usually the only reason a box cake turns out badly is if you don't follow the instructions to a T. You have to carefully mix it to the correct times and speeds. I don't think I'd use pound cake for cupcakes. It's too heavy. Maybe the Angel Food cake, but if it were me I'd use something basic, like yellow, white, strawberry, devil's food. Try the box, there simple and just read the instructions thoroughly. If your cake is turning out too dry you're over mixing it. Good Luck, and e-mail me if you have anymore questions.

Some cakes I make from scratch such as German chocolate, carrot, pig picking cake, etc. Regular yellow or chocolate I use the mix.I don't like the frosting that are ready made, they are really terrible.I always make my own frosting.

They taste all right. Fast and easy. I use Betty Crocker. To the answerer above. What is a pig picking cake? Email me the recipe.

My favorite box cake mix is GreatValue from WalMart. When pressed for time, I have tried all flavors, & been told that they are all excellent, but the yellow cake ws the biggest winner. The GreatValue canned frostings aren't bad either..

I love to bake from scratch and my preference is always to use a homemade recipe. I do think most box cake mix tastes like "the box" but if I am pressed for time and HAVE to use a cake mix the only one I will use is Duncan Hines Butter Recipe Golden. You put a stick of butter in it and it makes ALL the difference in the world. I also add a tsp of vanilla. And strawberry filling sounds yummy with either pound cake or angel cake.
