It depends what kind of curry you're making! If you're thinking of Indian curry, you're thinking maybe some kind of meat (chicken, beef, lamb, goat), onions, lots of spices, possibly lentils or cauliflower. For Japanese curry you would have onions, carrots, usually chicken or tofu, and you could put peas and other vegetables (some people I know put celery), and certain recipes will call for apple paste in the curry itself too to sweeten it up. Thai curry has bamboo shoots, chicken pieces, kaffir lime leaves, and maybe some unique seasonings like ginger/galangal/lemongrass, plus fish sauce as a flavoring agent and coconut milk as a thickening agent.

For "generic" curries using the plain old powder, you'd probably be safe with some carrots, onions, mushrooms, chicken, beef, or tofu, maybe peas, and green onions. But you can really spice it up any way you like.
