How much broth do I need to subsitutue 2 boullion cubes?!
Thanks in advance
Answers: I am obviously not a cook but I am learning. I am also making soup which happens to call for 2 boullion cubes but said I could substitute broth ... I just don't know how much broth to use. Any info would help tons.
Thanks in advance
Most bouillon cubes make 2 cups of broth, so you would need 4 cups of broth.
And if you are just learning to cook, let me add some advice-always use broth if you can. Bouillon has way to much sodium, and doesn't taste as good as broth. But homemade rich stock is far better than canned broth.
Vegetable stock is the easiest to make. Just save the peels and end pieces from your onions, celery, leeks, carrots, turnips, zucchini, green beans, and corn cobs. Saute all the veggies except corn cobs in a large stock pot. Add 2 quarts of water to the pot and simmer for 3-4 hours. Season with salt and pepper, and herbs if you like them. The most versatile herbs for veggie broth are thyme, sage, and marjoram. If adding the herbs, use 1/2 tsp each, and add with the water. Salt is last. Strain out the veggies, discard. Let broth cool completely if not using immediately, and store up to 1 week in the fridge. Will last 1 month in the freezer.
For meat stock-you can use leftover meat, you would use about 1/4 pound meat with visible fat [you can defat it later], and the bones. Stick the meat into the fridge, and roast the bones-this gives your stock an awesome, deeply rich flavor- for about an hour in a 400F oven. Meanwhile, you'd chop up onion, carrot, and celery and saute 1-2 minutes in a large stock pot. Add the meat and lightly brown. Add 2 quarts of water, and the bones. Simmer for 3-4 hours. Strain out the meat, veggies and bones. You can use the meat if you like, but discard the veggies and bones. Let cool completely. Store in fridge up to 1 week, or 1 month in the freezer. To defat, open container after it has been in the fridge at least 3 hours and scoop up the fat.
Welcome to the wonderful world of cuisine art. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Not seeing the recipe I would say substitue the broth for any other liquid called for.
If it says add 4 cups of water and 2 bullion cubes, use just 4 cups of broth.
2 cups of broth
How much liquid does the recipe call for with the 2 cubes?
I'd substitute 3/4 to all of the liquid with broth.
1 bouillon cube = 1 cup of broth.
It should tell you on the bouillon package.
2 cups
