How you construct a wonky cake?!

I was a first timer to when I made this one and it turned out splendidly!
I hope it works for you!
I've never heard of it but layers can be secured with toothpicks if necessary if the icing alone doesn't hold them.
You need to use a 1/2" dowel to hold your construction together, and don't have any of your layers off by more than about 15 degrees, or you're going to have some split layers. And ice as you go, or you're going to have a disaster - have you thought about using a rolled fondant to add more stability to your cake layers?
I hope it turns out beautifully, and many happy returns to your friend!
I've watched chefs construct wonky cakes on FoodNetwork cake challengs, and they stick long wooden dowels through the layers to secure then. Sometimes they have to hammer them in if there's a lot of layers.
You shape them as they look. You slant the top of one and the bottom of another that goes on top. By doing this you end up with the 2 angles resting nicely on eachother. I decorate cakes and honestly there are tips on the net and they are not that difficult but your friend will be thrilled.
You can use wooden drowels if you are going to use American fondant icing or even if you just want added security. Most cake stores sell these.
