Balsamic Vinegar Replacement?!

Question: I have red wine vinegar, can that be used as a replacement for Balsamic? What could be used as a replacement?

you can use it, but it will have a sharper taste than balsamic. Balsamic has an almost sweet taste to the tang...it's the flavor of the balsamic that enhances a recipe...not necessarily the "vinegar" flavor

Yes, it should be ok.

Yes, that should work just fine. I like red wine vinegar even better.

Yes really any vinegar can be a replacement. How much is being called for? If it is minimal (less than 1/4 cup) any vinegar will do.

I've done this a couple of times but only when making salad dressings. I've used red wine vinegar and rice wine vinegar. I also add a little sugar or honey because balsamic vinegar has a sweet taste.

But, I'd be careful about substituting large amouts of other vinegars for balsamic. Red wine and cider vinegars have a strong, harsh flavor when compared to balsamic.
