How long do I cook 5 lbs of Corn beef in a slow cooker ?!
Also how much water do I use ?
Answers: I would like to cook it on high to cut down on the time.
Also how much water do I use ?
6-8 hours on high
2 cups water
cover 1/2 with water
6-8 hrs on high
Stove top could simmer to done in about 4 hrs. 5 pounds is alot of meat!
Cook it for at least 4 hours by itself, then add carrots, onions and potatoes cook until tender, at the last min. add the cabbage in large chunks and cook just until tender. Serve immediately. otherwise the cabbage will turn Grey and stink up your kitchen
One hour on HIGH is equal to two hours on LOW.
Only fill the crockpot one half to three quarters full. The foods will not cook properly if the appliance is filled to the brim.
Foods cooked on the bottom of the slow cooker cook faster and will be moister because they are immersed in the simmering liquid
Most meats require 8 hours of cooking on LOW. Use cheaper cuts of meat - not only do you save money, but these meats work better in the slow cooker. Cheaper cuts of meat have less fat, which makes them more suited to crockpot cooking. Moist, long cooking times result in very tender meats.
Ingredients
1 large package of corned beef brisket, with seasoning packet, either center or point cut.
1 head of cabbage
12 small organic red potatoes, cut in half
3 large organic carrots
1 container of flavored beef broth- Imagine now has low sodium.
Directions
Turn your slow cooker on low, place corned beef brisket inside, fattiest side down, cut slices longways across grain of meat.
Keep the juices from the bag your meat was in, what I do is fill with water, and pour on top of meat so you don't waste any of the juices, which impart the flavor you will get at the end.
Cut open the spice mixture, and pour on top of your meat and juices.
Cut your carrots in even sliced chunks, throw in along with potatoes and broth. If broth isn't enough to cover meat, add just enough water to cover.
Cook on low for 6-7 hours. During last half hour of cooking time is when I place the cabbage. I like to keep it in about medium sized pieces.
This is really simple and tasty. All you need is some bread to go with it.
Note_
If you like you could first cut off the fat ( before placing in slow cooker) I do like to keep a bit of fat on the meat myself, as during the time it's cooking in the slow cooker it will fall off and you can just scoop it right out. I think cooking with a bit of the fat still on is what gives the broth that buttery flavor. So I prefer that instead of cutting all the fat right off.
