Can i use new potatoes for potato scones/cakes??!


Question: i really want to make potato scones, asked my mum to bring home some tatties and she got new potatoes!! is it fine to use these??? thanks in advance :) x x

No, new potatoes are not dry enough, too wet or waxy and the mixture becomes very gluey ugh !

Old season are best as they can be mashed which is what you want.

I don't think these will work. They are fluffy enough. The texture is wrong to put in a scone.

No, sorry. New potatoes are waxy so they won't work. Russet potatoes are "fluffy". Fluffy works better.

You need potatoes which go floury when cooked for potato scones. You also need to peel them, which is quicker with larger potatoes!

As long as you mash them well i don't see why not.

I would use older larger spuds personally. Some that fall apart when you're cooking them because they mash easier. It seems a waste of lovely new potatoes to use them in scones. Keep them for dinner with knobs of butter and sprinkled with parsley.
