A replacement for treacle in a gingerbread recipe?!

Question: The gingerbread is, according to the pictures and description, a "tea-bread", a kind of cake-y type gingerbread. The recipe calls for 1/4 C of treacle. Would honey or maple syrup work as substitutes? If not what could I use?

Depending on who wrote the recipe, they may mean Molasses (as Molasses is often referred to as Treacle in the UK). Molasses (or for a richer, darker taste blackstrap molasses) is traditional in gingerbread. I've used maple syrup to sub out about half of the molasses in a recipe when I've run out of molasses so that could work. Honey might work too, but I'm not sure how it compares as far as sweetness goes. Molasses is certainly your cheapest solution.

Brown sugar

honey and maple syrup would work fine but they would change the flavor

molasses especially if you can find the lighter colored molasses.

I'd go with the syrup!

Golden syrup ...is as thick as mollasses but is sweet and golden like maple syrup...
