Why was there plastic in my rice?!

Question: Last night, I boiled some rice in a pan of water. I stirred it occasionally.

After a while, some scum formed on the surface, not that unusual. However, when it was finished and I drained off the water, I noticed around the edge of the pan there appeared to be a ribbon of plastic. I picked it out, and it looked like thin plastic.

The pan was originally clean, the rice had no hint of plastic in it (I poured it in to a small cup first), so my question is:

a) was it plastic?
b) where did it come from?

Find out if its plastic by burning it - if it stinks and melts and burns your fingers then its plastic!
If it smells very faintly like burning hair its some of the starch and protein has released from the rice and as it cooled the protein have rebound into a sheet - this is quite common in commerical kitchens where they cook huge batches and is quite easy to achieve having the heat too high so the side of the pan get very hot.

i don't know what it is, but I know it isn't plastic, it's what comes off the surface of the rice when you boil it

It was more than likely starch...

The world may never know!

It was Starch and if you let it dry its an absolute pig to get off the pan

It's just starch from the rice.

My boyfriend is half filipino so needless to say we eat a lot of rice so i'm sure what you are seeing is the starch on the rice..
I usually wash my rice..it rinses some of the starch off of the rice... when you have the rice in you cooker or pan rinse it a few times until the water becomes clear..b/c if you add water you will notice it will turn really cloudy.. thats the starch..rinsing your rice will also keep it from becoming sticky

It was a free gift you fool, you've ruined it now.

starch

It is most definitely the starch from the rice. It happens often. No worry.

it was starch that sometimes looks like plastic
