Is it still safe to use farberware pots after they become discolored from letting water boil down in it?!

Question: I accidentally allowed water to boil down and kept cooking with no water in pot. It looks like the protective layer of Steel is gone exposing an underlayer.

yuck why waste your money on cheap pots and pans go out and spend 2000.00 on good quality stainless steel ones for a lifetime

most likely, unless you got the pot to over 400 degrees, they are ok.
did you try something like limeaway or other hard water deposit type of remover?

It's just a chemical reaction that has discolored the pot. It is safe to use. Don't worry.

Try scrubbing (very gently) in one small area with some scouring powder or a Brillo pad. This may uncover your steel. It sounds like you may have hard water and it has placed a coating of minerals on the inside of the pot. That or you have just changed the color of the metal by too much heat for an extended time. If the scouring works, then it is hard water; if not, the "super heating" will stay that color. It won't hurt you, just won't look very nice.

You should NOT be able to remove any layers by boiling a pot dry. That would take incredibly intense heat.
