What cooking utensils should a newbie purchase?!
Answers: I want to learn to cook and wondering what items to have in the kitchen, like a measuring cup?
Get a descent 8" chef's knife, a 4" pairing knife and a wood cutting board.
Measuring cups/spoons/scale
Pots and pans/glass bake wear
Dutch oven or crock pot
Mixing bowls
Electric mixer
Strainer
Wire whisk
Pastry brush
potato peeler
can opener
rubber spatulas
metal spatulas
Good set of knifes/cutting board
cookie sheet pans
digital thermometer
blender
You need a decent pots; stock pot, dutch oven pot, small pot.
You need some spatulas; small and large for scraping out of jars and mixing.
A decent hand mixer and a good quality stand mixer, like Kitchenaid.
Pot holders, Lots of big spoons and different types for stirring. Make sure they won't scratch your new pots if you get the teflon coated.
Measuring cups and spoons. Different sized cake pans.
Rolling pin, cookie cutters, pastry board, although you can use parchment paper.
Hope this helps.
Congratulations. You are going to love cooking:

Not a whole lot to start. A frying pan, a large pot...don't be fooled by words like "stock pot". A big pot is a big pot. A slotted spoon, a large unslotted spoon and a spatula is all about you need to get started. Once you get cooking, you'll know what you need. Also, a cookie sheet. You'll need one of those too. I don't think anyone needs measuring cups or spoons. Go ask a 90 year old how many measuring things she has. The answer would be NONE. You do it by taste and eyeballing it. Good Luck!
Get measuring cups (you can get them in a set--from 1/4 cup to 1 cup) they don't have to be expensive. Measuring spoons, ditto. Get spoons for stirring, a set of nonstick pots and pans and a cutting board. Make sure it's plastic, not wood. All these can be inexpensive but do get the best knife you can afford. One good sharp knife is better than a whole set of cheap ones that won't hold their sharp edge.
