The best coffee I have ever had the pleasure to drink is the rare Kopi Luwak coffee from Indonesia, that stuff is amazing! But I make and drink coffee on a regular basis and people who see me go through the labor of making it think I'm crazy until they try it for them selves.
Fresh grind the whole beans in a cast iron hand coffee grinder (mine are 80 to 110 years old and still work beautifully.) Boil the amount of water you need and turn off the heat, wait 10 seconds for more than 8 cupa and 5 seconds for less than 8 cups. Pour in the grounds and let steep for 5 minutes, then add 1 cup ice cold water to settle the grounds. I don't use a perculator of any type. Just make it cowboy style. There is no harsh acidic flavor so there is no need for sweetner or cream I make 1 gallon at a time in my camp coffee pot, even at home and I make it in my Dutch oven when camping. You can add a egg shell or 1/2 tsp salt to do the same thing to pre-ground coffee but doing it the old fashoned way by hand truly turns out a better cup/pot of coffee The coarse grind is perfect and I've even used a hammer or rock or mallett to grind the beans in a zip lock bag! It really works and makes a awesome cup of coffee. Starbucks coffee will not touch my lips, its burned taste and high acidity level ruins what good should be.
There is an additive that you can put in coffee called chickory. There is another one I know, but I am trying to patent the recipe.
