European Easter Loaf Recipe???!

Question: My great-grandmother used to make something she called "Easter Loaf". She was Bohemian, and it was wonderful! The only thing I remember is that it had sausage in it, and it was a flat loaf.

I found recipes for a Bohemian sweet bread (Houska...which she also used make at Easter), but I can't find anything like this particular recipe. Does anybody have an old family recipe similar to this?? Thanks!!

Just finished making Sekanice. My mom made it every Easter on Easter Saturday. Her family recipe was as follows: 1 1/2 lb ground pork and veal (total of both together) browned
1 small loaf of white bread (1lb) less 6 slices, torn into pieces and then soaked in milk (just enough to moisten all the bread)
10 eggs - raw
1/2 of a garlic bulb (yes half of the entire bulb)
2 Tblsp of lard (I used butter or Crisco would be fine_

Mix all of the above ingredients and pour into a 9 x 13 (or maybe smaller) depending on how high you want it. It rises a little. Hope this is what you remember! Our family loves it hot, warm or cold. Enjoy!

D....could you please also post the baking directions?? Report It

I found a sausage bread, maybe it will help....
I'm going to do another search.
I looked up Sekanice Easter Bread for you and it said it is a meatloaf.

    Sausage Bread

    6 oz Italian sausage
    1 med Onion; minced
    2 1/4 tsp Yeast
    3 c Bread flour
    3/8 c Wheat bran
    1 1/2 tbs Sugar
    1/2 tbs Salt
    1 1/2 tbs Parmesan, grated
    3/4 tsp Thyme leaves
    3/4 tsp Rosemary leaves
    3/4 tsp Oregano leaves
    3/4 tsp Basil leaves
    1 1/8 c Water; warm

Remove casing from sausage and crumble meat into medium nonstick skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring to break up sausage, until it begins to render its juices, about 3 minutes. Add onion and cook until sausage is no longer pink and onion softens, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Bring all ingredients to room temperature and pour into bakery, in order. Select "white bread" and push Start.

In hot & humid weather, use 1/8 c less water.

Couldn't find it but I did find a website for Czech recipes and you can email your description of this bread. Perhaps they are familiar with this recipe.
