What should I buy when I go to the grocery store if I want to EAT HEALTHY?!

Question: I want to make some healthy meals and recipes for me and my family. What should I buy when I go to the grocery store?

Besides the obvious "fruits and veggies, low cal stuff, healthy foods"

Stay away from processed as much as possible. That opens up a whole world, actually!

Lean cuts of meat (if you're not sure, ask the butcher), lean ground beef (90% or 95% lean) or better yet ground turkey.

Vegetables (careful not to overcook them but do use spices you like). Spices are a huge aspect of healthy eating because we tend to use fats for flavor. When you cut those fats, you're left with bland...unless you use spices. Smell different spices and if they smell good, you'll probably like them. Mix and match.

Fruits are terrific for snacks.

Low fat dairy.

Whole grains.

For sweets, you can make cookies or brownies or cakes, etc. with agave nectar instead of sugar. It's better for you because it's lower on the glycemic index and doesn't give you that sugar high followed by a slump.

You might check with your doctor as "eating healthy" for one person can mean one thing and quite another to someone else.

You kind of answered your own question. Shop the perimeter of the store and stay away from the boxes and cans. Except canned fruit or veggies of course.

yogurt, apples, pasta

You should make salads. So, buy lettuce. Buy some flax seeds. Flax seeds include the 3 omega fatty acids. I know it has the word "fatty" in it, but they are full of fiber that can regulate your digestive system, keeping you slimmer. You can sprinkle Flax seeds on almost anything, even dessert. Also, if you like spicy stuff, eat lots of peppers. They help you burn calories faster.

Buy any soy based or wheat product. Anything low fat or lean is usually better.
