What are herbs good for!?!
Answers: ok so my dad always puts corriander in the chicken when he cooks it so i was wondering are herbs actually good for your health or are they just for flavour. and if herbs are good for you, what specific part of body are they good for!
Besides being wonderful ingredients for flavoring food, different herbs have different health benefits.
Coriander (and cilantro leaves), for example, has these known benefits:
1. Protects against the Salmonella bacteria
2. Reportedly works as a natural chelation treatment
3. Aids in digestion and helps settle the stomach and prevent flatulence
4. Is an anti-inflammatory that may alleviate symptoms of arthritis
5. Protects against urinary tract infections
6. Prevents nausea
7. Relieves intestinal gas
8. Lowers blood sugar
9. Lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) and raises good cholesteraol (HDL)
10. A good source of dietary fiber
11. A good source of iron
12. A good source of magnesium
13. Rich in phytonutrients and flavonoids
Basil, another popular culinary herb has other benefits. Basil is a natural source of beta-carotene, an anti-oxidant which combats free radicals in the body, preventing damage to blood vessels and the build up of cholesterol in the blood stream. Only the oxidised cholesterol adheres to vessel walls restricting blood flow. Free radical action is the main factor in conditions such as asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritisAn array of unique flavonoids is also found in basil which protect cell structures and chromosomes from oxygen-based and radiation damage. The oil extract from basil has been found to provide protection against growth of many pathogenic bacteria which are posing a major health problem through their resistance to commonly used antibiotics. Another component of basil’s volatile oils, eugenol, is found to be effective in blocking action of an enzyme causing inflammatory health problems such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions.
they are good for smoking ;-)
they are good for cooking
You can use herbs to flavour instead of salt use herbs much healthier for you.
I have two full racks of herbs that I always use but you need to know what herbs and spices compliment what dishes. I always say that the secret is always in the sauce, so by adding the right herbs to the sauce creates an authentic dish that will match any professional chef. Tasty gravy can make any home made Sunday roast very special that any carvery will not match due to the addition of herbs etc.
Regarding health benefits, yes they do provide some benefit. Too much salt can be bad so herbs can take the place of salt and be just as interesting. Also lot's of over the counter medicines contain natural elements such as herbs and herbal tea is another source of goodness.
There are also many herbal shampoos along with bath foams etc. that contain herbs. The list is endless but they do provide some benefits for the body.
some have only flavor some have benefits
it depend on the herb u r using and each one effect different part of the body
t'll be better f u ask about a specific one
Herbs are great to add flavour to food, but they do have beneficial properties regarding health. I'm not an expert on herbs so I don't know which ones do what. No doubt someone who is more knowledgeable than me will answer you though.
They add subtle flavours to food.
Some herbs have other therapeutic qualities and some herbs have medicinal properties.
You either love or hate them.
Me, I'm not too fond of certain herbs e.g. I dislike the taste of coriander, rosemary, thyme and garlic.
They are good for both purposes. Flavour and health benefits... and loaded with vitamins.

If you go here you can read all about what herbs and spices are good for. The other site I had bookmarked won't work today.
In the past herbs were used in place of the "patent medicines" we have now. They were a lot safer for us than all these chemicals the doctors prescribe.

Herbs have 3 functions.

2) they presevere food from going worse ( mayoran for excample)
