Eggnog is a very traditional drink, that goes way far back in History. Eggnog is a tradition that was brought to America from Europe. (Which is partially true, but there are other theories about the origin of this beverage). Eggnog is related to various milk and wine punches that had been "concocted" long ago in the "Old World". However, in America a new twist was put on the theme. Rum was used in the place of wine. In Colonial America, rum was commonly called "grog", so the name eggnog is likely derived from the very descriptive term for this drink, "egg-and-grog", which corrupted to egg'n'grog and soon to eggnog. At least this is one version...

Other theories about the origin comes from the word "nog" of eggnog comes from the word "noggin". A noggin was a small, wooden, carved mug. It was used to serve drinks at table in taverns (while drinks beside the fire were served in tankards). It is thought that eggnog started out as a mixture of Spanish "Sherry" and milk.

With it's European roots and the availability of the ingredients, eggnog soon became a popular wintertime drink throughout Colonial America. It had much to recommend it; it was rich, spicy, and alcoholic--> the taste is very lovely, but it depends on the person who is drinking it. I love this beverage but some of my family members and friends do not. It has a very spicy "raw" flavor, so the first time you drink it, it will be a tad bit bazaar but it will eventually grow on you, if you do enjoy it to begin with. This beverage is usually served during colder months, and during holidays-- such as Christmas. Because of the alcohol, it warms you up, and people of all ages would drink it. Now a days, there is eggnog without the alcohol, so it is more distributable.

Here is a recipe for it so you can try it at home. Personally, I would not use it right now because its almost spring, but it still is nippy out so you should give it a shot! :D
By the way, this recipe is VERY light and fluffy. So it wont be too strong or heavy the first time you make it!
INGREDIENTS:

# 12 Eggs, separated
# 1 1/2 cups Sugar
# 1 quart Whole Milk
# 1 1/2 quarts Heavy Cream
# 3 cups Bourbon
# 1/2 cup Dark Rum
# 2 cups Cognac
# 1 quart Vanilla Ice Cream
# Freshly grated Nutmeg

Preparation:

1. In a very large bowl, beat egg yolks until thick and pale yellow. Gradually add sugar to the yolks. With a wire whisk, beat in milk and 1 quart cream. Add the bourbon, rum and cognac, stirring constantly. This cooks the egg mixture.

2. Just before serving, beat the egg whites until stiff, adding a little sugar to sweeten. Fold into the egg mixture. Whip the remaining 1/2 quart heavy cream until stiff and fold it in. Then fold in the ice cream.

3. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

Egg nog is a drink usually consumed around Christmas. It's made out of eggs, milk and sugar and usually flavored with nutmeg. It is often mixed with alcohol before being served.

Personally, I find that is does taste good but not everyone likes it. Some places make egg nog milkshakes with it around the holidays. It's usually not served with anything except perhaps some Christmas cookies.

Egg nog is exactly what the people above described. There is a big difference between good and bad egg nog, and if you've had the good stuff then you know. People prefer it differently, and I think it has alot to do with reigon. I prefer it thick, full of nutmeg and ice cold. It's creamy and yum. And I love it spiked as well, great on christmas.
