You can use any combo you want. Just know that using yams means needing less sugar in your recipe than if using sweet potatos. It really is a matter of personal taste as they are pretty much interchangeable IMHO! The sweet potato usually holds up better than the yam, as the yam tends to get slimey if overcooked.

i would say stick to what the cook books are telling you .. if they don't specify between "yam" or "sweet potato" then it obviously doesn't matter too much ! =)

1/2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

Mix well
Pour into buttered pan

Topping: 1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/3 cup butter or margarine (melted)
1 cup pecans

Crumble topping evenly over potato mixture. Bake at 350° for 35-45 minutes uncovered

3 sweet potatoes
115 g butter, softened
15 ml vanilla extract
500 g white sugar
2 g ground nutmeg
4 eggs, beaten
180 ml evaporated milk
2 (9 inch) unbaked 9 inch pie crusts

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add sweet potatoes and cook until tender but still firm, about 30 minutes. Drain, cool, peel and mash. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

In a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, butter, sugar, vanilla and nutmeg. In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk and blend into the sweet potato mixture. Pour into pie shells and bake in preheated oven for 60 minutes, or until done.
