There are 2 types of truffles, Black and White and are found all over the world, not just in Italy as stated above.
I have eaten truffles from Italy, France, China, and even from the Pacific Northwest here in the United States.
Black truffles taste very earthy and white truffles have a very pungent perfume.
They are hard to find because they grow underground and you need trained dogs or pigs to find them. So, therefore they are expensive.
Truffle salt is mixed with you guessed it: Truffles and Salt!
Rather than using truffle salt, may I suggest getting your hands on truffle oil. Cost is about $30 for a 6 oz. bottle. It seems expensive but it goes a long way.
Also, you can add the oil to the salt and it will flavor it in the same way.
It would be very difficult to explain exactly how it tastes, you need to find out for yourself.
truffles are extremely hard to find, bc they are all wild, and now their use in becoming more in demand in the world of fine dining , sending the price even more up.... ive never tried it.
